Viji Rao's journey in the world of Bharatanatyam began at the tender age of five, marking the start of a lifelong dedication to this classical South Indian dance form. Her initial steps into the realm of dance were guided by her father and first dance teacher, K. Shiva Rao, whose encouragement laid the foundation for her future success.

Rao's passion for Bharatanatyam grew at very early age of her training, so did her quest for knowledge and perfection. Her formative years were shaped by rigorous training under the tutelage of eminent artists from the prestigious Kalakshetra School of Bharatanatyam. Among her notable mentors were Shridhar and Anuradha, Prof. C.V. Chandrasekhar, and Bragha Bessell, each contributing to Rao's development as a dancer and helping her find the unique movement vocabulary that would later define her artistic style. Rao's commitment to excellence was evident early on. While pursuing her Bachelor's degree in science, she simultaneously undertook dance proficiency examinations. Her dedication and talent shone through as she stood first in the state of Karnataka state secondary exam education, India, a remarkable achievement that foreshadowed her future success in the world of dance.

For eleven years, she immersed herself in the vibrant dance scene of London, working as a professional dancer and choreographer. Shortly after her arrival in Philadelphia, Rao founded Three Aksha, a dance company and educational institution.
